Love Bombing

Love bombing is an overwhelming rush of affection, attention, and promises early in a relationship, used to fast-track intimacy and lower your guard. It feels like being chosen. Its function is to make you depend on the person before you know them.

In the first weeks it can be dazzling. Constant messages, grand gestures, talk of soulmates and forever before you have even met each other's friends. The pace is the tell. Real closeness is built slowly, with room to breathe. Love bombing collapses that timeline on purpose, so that by the time the warmth cools you are already invested and unsure what you did to lose it.

It works because being adored answers a very old hunger, especially if you learned early that love had to be earned. The flood of attention floods the reward system, and the contrast when it is withdrawn is what hooks you. That swing between too much and suddenly nothing is what later becomes trauma bonding. For a people-pleaser it is doubly disorienting, because the fawn instinct reads the intensity as connection and rushes to keep it.

The difference between love bombing and genuine warmth is not the amount of affection. It is what happens when you slow down. A safe person relaxes when you set a small limit or ask for space. Love bombing tightens: the sulk, the guilt, the pressure to prove you feel the same. Noticing that response, gently and without a verdict, tells you more than any promise does.

Common questions

What is love bombing?

Love bombing is a pattern of excessive affection, attention, and promises early in a relationship, delivered fast enough to lower your guard and create dependence before you really know the person. The intensity is the point, not the affection itself.

Is love bombing always intentional?

Not always. Some people love-bomb deliberately, as a tactic. Others do it out of their own attachment anxiety and fear of being alone. Either way the effect on you is similar, so it is worth paying attention to the pace and to how the person reacts when you slow things down.

What is the difference between love bombing and genuine love?

Genuine warmth can handle a boundary. When you ask for space or set a small limit, a safe person relaxes. With love bombing, a boundary is met with sulking, guilt, or pressure. The clue is not how much affection there is, it is what happens when you say no.
